Sure, Make a Plan to Recruit Great Talent, But Make a Plan to RETAIN Great Talent, Too

Sure, Make a Plan to Recruit Great Talent, But Make a Plan to RETAIN Great Talent, Too

Heard a TED Talk one time about healthy marital relationships. The takeaway applies all too well to recruitment and retention:

“People go where they feel welcomed, but they stay where they feel valued.”

Ways We’ve Seen Employers Welcome Potential Hires and Land the Candidate:

  • Giving them the opportunity to speak with multiple members of the organization
  • Being genuinely grateful to the candidate for taking time to entertain a role within their company
  • Offering a solid increase from their last employer
  • Having an exec or hiring manager personally call the candidate around the time of offer to speak about the candidate’s goals and career within their company
  • Serving them an extra gallon of company cool-aid (JK)

Ways We’ve Seen Employers Forget to Value Their Current Employees

  • Neglecting to speak to them about their career progression at least every six months
  • Allowing them to work 60-70 hour weeks and not provide them additional support so that they burn out
  • Neglecting to communicate with them regarding raises or employee benefit enhancements
  • Failing to provide new challenges that keep their positions fresh and interesting

Managing Human Resources is not managing rocket launches; it’s just hard.
